Semaglutide Information

Semaglutide belongs to a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. These drugs have been shown to help with weight loss and blood sugar management when used in conjunction with a balanced diet and moderate exercise.

Beyond these benefits, semaglutide has been shown to reduce the risk of experiencing major cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks, strokes, or death in adults with vascular risk factors.

How it Works

Semaglutide mimics the action of GLP-1, a hormone naturally produced by the body.

This drug stimulates insulin secretion, reduces glucagon secretion (which lowers blood sugar levels), and delays stomach emptying.

These actions help regulate the release of nutrients into the bloodstream, contributing to improved blood sugar control and feelings of fullness after meals.

Administration Instructions

Semaglutide is a 1x weekly injection that takes less than two minutes. Dosing instructions are provided both on your prescription bottle, as well as below.

Start by getting everything prepared for your injections.

  1. Begin by thoroughly washing your hands
  2. Next, gather your UBI Telehealth bottle of semaglutide, syringes and alcohol pads
  3. Pop off the purple cap off your semaglutide bottle
  4. Take one alcohol swab and wipe the top off for several seconds, letting it air dry for 10 seconds after
  5. Pick up your semaglutide bottle and hold it upside down, then tilt it sideways and confirm there are no air bubbles present (if any are present, gently tap the bottom of the bottle)
  6. Take your syringe, remove the cap from the plunger and then the cap from the needle side
  7. Gently insert the needle into the center of the rubber stopper on the semaglutide bottle.
  8. Draw up your desired dose of semaglutide into the syringe, per the instructions provided to you by your UBI Physician. If any air bubbles are present within the syringe, gently tap the syringe and push it out back into the bottle, and continue filling to your desired dose.
  9. Next, pick your injection site. Select a site that is 2 inches from the belly button. (Make sure you rotate this injection site from side to side weekly and never inject in the exact same spot on a weekly basis)
  10. Take the alcohol swab, and starting from the desired injection site, work outwardly swabbing your stomach in a circular fashion
  11. Finally, take your syringe, and holding it at a 90 degree angle to your body, pinch the skin around the injection site, and insert the needle all the way, ensuring to inject the total dose.
  12. Remove the needle and inspect the injection site
  13. Repackage medication back inside medication dram, and return to the refrigerator.
Storage Instructions:

After receiving your semaglutide in the medical packaging, it is best to store it in the refrigerator with a consistent temperature between 36-46 degrees Fahrenheit.
Although the product should be stable at room temperatures up to 30 days, we recommend storing it in the refrigerator as a best practice.

Common side effects of semaglutide include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite. This is because it acts to slow down stomach emptying.

These side effects often improve over time as the body adjusts to the medication. If these side effects continue, the escalation of the dosage will need to be adjusted by your UBI provider.

Rare Side Effects

A rare potential side effect of this class of medicines includes thyroid tumors, including cancer. You need to follow up with your primary care provider if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing or shortness of breath.

Another rare but serious side effects may include pancreatitis and allergic reactions. While it is not known whether this medicine can be used in patients who have had prior history of pancreatitis, we recommend not to use this medication if you have had this history.
