As we age, hair loss becomes more common due to combination of genetic, hormonal and physiological factors.

Genetic factors play a very important role. Androgenetic alopecia, better known as male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness are most common form of hair loss. This is largely related to hormone dye-hydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT causes hair follicles to shrink, resulting in thinner hair and eventually new hair growth stops.

Reduced hormone levels occur as we age and this also plays an important role. Levels of certain hormones, such as estrogen in women and testosterone in men tend to drop with age, and this can lead to hair thinning and hair loss. Furthermore, the anagen phase, or the growth phase of the hair cycle, tends to shorten with age. Minoxidil helps to dilate blood vessels. When applied topically to the scalp, it increases blood flow to hair follicles, providing more oxygen, blood, and nutrients, which can stimulate hair growth. It also prolongs the Anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle and may also enlarge miniaturized follicles, increasing their size and diameter.

Finasteride helps to reduce DHT levels and helps to reduce loss of hair follicles allowing stronger and thicker hair. While it has some potential side effects when given as oral medication, the topical application as spray does not have the typical side effects of the oral treatment as it doesn’t get absorbed into the bloodstream.

Combining minoxidil and finasteride can be more effective than using either treatment alone. Minoxidil stimulates hair growth and prolongs the growth phase, while finasteride reduces DHT levels, addressing the hormonal cause of hair loss. This combination approach targets different aspects of hair loss, leading to better overall results. Some patients may experience scalp irritation with this combination and for this reason, we added Ketoconazole.

Ketoconazole, primarily known as an antifungal medication, has been found to help reduce hair loss, particularly in cases of androgenetic alopecia. It also has anti-androgenic properties and inhibits action of androgenic hormones such as DHT; it also has antifungal properties, and as such it is effective against fungal infections of the scalp such as dandruff.  These conditions can cause inflammation and damage to the hair follicles, leading to hair loss. By treating these fungal infections, Ketoconazole, helps to maintain a healthy scalp environment conducive to hair growth . It also has anti-inflammatory properties and in several studies, Ketoconazole has been shown to stimulate hair growth.

Latanoprost, the fourth compound in UB restore, has been found to prolong the Anagen or growth phase of the hair cycle resulting in longer and thicker hair strand. Studies have shown that latanoprost can also increase the density of hair follicles, particularly in areas affected by hair loss.
