As we age, hair loss becomes more common due to combination of genetic, hormonal and physiological factors.

Genetic factors play a very important role. Androgenetic alopecia, better known as male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness are most common form of hair loss. This is largely related to hormone dye-hydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT causes hair follicles to shrink, resulting in thinner hair and eventually new hair growth stops.

Reduced hormone levels occur as we age and this also plays an important role. Levels of certain hormones, such as estrogen in women and testosterone in men tend to drop with age, and this can lead to hair thinning and hair loss. What is less commonly known, is that aging can also lead to reduced blood flow to the scalp which in turn affects the delivery of essential nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles. Without adequate nourishment, hair follicles can weaken and hair growth can slow down.

Furthermore, the anagen phase, or the growth phase of the hair cycle, tends to shorten with age. This means hair grows for a shorter period before entering the telogen- or resting- phase, leading to overall thinner and shorter hair . This is all a cascade of events that do not reverse but hair loss tends to continue, and men and women will continue to see thinning of hair and continued shedding, going into the older years.

We at UBI Telehealth, have discovered a combination of four treatments can be very impactful in first reducing hair loss and then inducing actual hair growth and prolonging the growth phase of the hair cycle, UBRestore. This is a combination of minoxidil (generic for Rogaine), Finasteride (generic for Propecia), Latanoprost, and Ketoconazole

This combination approach targets different aspects of hair loss, leading to better overall results. Some patients may experience scalp irritation with this combination and for this reason, we added Ketoconazole.

Ketoconazole, primarily known as an antifungal medication, has been found to help reduce hair loss, particularly in cases of androgenetic alopecia. It also has anti-androgenic properties and inhibits action of androgenic hormones such as DHT; it also has antifungal properties, and as such it is effective against fungal infections of the scalp such as dandruff.  These conditions can cause inflammation and damage to the hair follicles, leading to hair loss. By treating these fungal infections, Ketoconazole, helps to maintain a healthy scalp environment conducive to hair growth. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and in several studies, Ketoconazole has been shown to stimulate hair growth.

Latanoprost, the fourth compound in UBRestore, has been found to prolong the Anagen or growth phase of the hair cycle resulting in longer and thicker hair strand. Studies have shown that latanoprost can also increase the density of hair follicles, particularly in areas affected by hair loss.
